Resuming the day on a score of six, Zimbabwe would have been hoping to build their innings. Fareed Ahmad's third over of the day brought about the downfall of Joylord Gumbie. Takudzwanashe Kaitano was strangled down the leg-side in the very next over.

In came Sikandar Raza, to accompany the youngster Ben Curran. Fareed was in the midst of a fiery spell and dismissed the latter, who played down the wrong line. By the 15th over, the hosts were four down with Yamin Ahmadzai scalping his second wicket in the form of Dion Myers.

Raza ended the first session two runs shy of his half-century. Skipper Craig Ervine, took his time but seemed assured nonetheless. After playing out a maiden over, Raza succumbed to left-arm spinner Zia-ur-Rehman whose first over in the match was a successful one. Newman Nyamhuri looked good in the middle, but shortly became Rashid Khan's second victim. Sean Williams' approach while batting was just the impetus the hosts required. In fact, he was just four runs short of his half-century while Tea was taken.

Unfortunately for Williams, he was dismissed for 49 after which there was a bit of an interruption due to rain. Afghanistan did not take long to wind up the Zimbabwean innings as Ervine was the last player to be dismissed. Rashid ended up with four wickets to his name. The hosts, having secured an 86-run lead, were off to a flying start.

Blessing Muzarabani snagged both the openers as Zimbabwe seemed to be on top of things. Rahmat Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi looked set to build a partnership together. However, the Afghan skipper departed via an absolute corker. Bad light stopped play early, with a lot to look forward to in the Test. A total of 13 wickets fell in the entire day.
