The 12th encounter in the 2024 Women's Premier League was played at Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium, featuring a match between Delhi Capitals and the Mumbai Indians. Delhi Capitals showcased a stellar performance, securing revenge for their earlier defeat against Mumbai in the event as Jemimah Rodrigues and Jess Jonassen emerged as the architects of this triumph.

After being put into bat first, the Capitals made a strong start with captain Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma opening, accumulating 48 runs in the first four overs. Verma, showcasing her aggression, played a brief innings of 28 off 12 balls, including three boundaries and two sixes, before getting caught by Yastika Bhatia off Shabnim Ismail’s delivery. Captain Lanning then formed a crucial partnership with Alice Capsey, contributing 31 runs for the second wicket. Capsey departed, and shortly after, Lanning also departed after an impressive 53 off 38 balls with six fours and two sixes.

The finishing touches were artfully applied by the stylish Indian batter, Jemimah Rodrigues, who played an outstanding unbeaten 69 in just 33 deliveries, featuring eight fours and three sixes. Rodrigues played a pivotal role, propelling her team to a formidable total of 192 runs in their allotted 20 overs. Alice Capsey, Saika Ishaque, Pooja Vastrakar, and Hayley Matthews each secured a wicket for the Mumbai Indians.

Star-studded MI crumble under the pressure of the big run chase

In pursuit of the formidable target of 193, the Mumbai squad, adorned with star players, found themselves grappling with pressure right from the start. Within the initial six overs, they witnessed the departure of four key top-order batters, which really halted their momentum in a challenging chase.

Despite an encouraging start by Hayley Matthews, who scored 29 off 17 balls, Mumbai struggled to sustain the required momentum. A late resurgence by Amanjot Kaur, contributing a commendable 42 off 27 balls, provided a flicker of hope, but it merely served to narrow the losing margin. Ultimately, Mumbai wrapped up their innings with a total of 163 in 20 overs, succumbing to a 29-run defeat.

Jess Jonassen and Marizanne Kapp emerged as the standout bowlers for Delhi Capitals, securing three and two wickets, respectively, contributing significantly to the team's victory in a compelling display of bowling prowess.
