Afghanistan vs Sri Lanka Head to Head Record in ODI World Cup History

Asian sides Afghanistan (AFG) and Sri Lanka (SL) squared off against each other in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023. Match No. 30 took place on Monday, October 30, 2023, at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune where the Afghans beat the Lankan Lions by a margin of seven wickets.

Hashmatullah Shahidi’s side began the tournament with two defeats against Asian teams Bangladesh and India. Afghanistan then stunned the cricketing world with their terrific victory against defending champions England in Delhi. The Afghans then returned to losing ways as they suffered another loss against New Zealand in Chennai. However, Shahidi’s men then again caused an upset as they beat Pakistan by eight wickets in Chennai.

On the other hand, the Lions lost their opening three encounters against South Africa, Pakistan and Australia. The Islanders then registered two wins on the bounce against the Netherlands and reigning champions England. 

Talking about the Head-to-Head meetings between the Afghans and the Lions, both have met each other thrice in the marquee tournament. Sri Lanka beat Afghanistan by four wickets in Dunedin in the 2015 edition, while they emerged victorious by a margin of 34 runs in Cardiff, yet again in the 2019 edition of the ODI World Cup. 

Speaking about the 2023 edition, Shahidi's men recorded another spectacular victory after already beating England and Pakistan. In Pune, Fazalhaq Farooqi picked up figures of 4/34 in his ten-over spell as Afghanistan bundled out the Lankans for 241 in 49.3 overs. In reply, veterans Rahmat Shah and Shahidi both struck their respective half-centuries while Azmatullah Omarzai also joined the party with an unbeaten 73 to guide his side to a victory in 45.2 overs.
