Hosts Australia (AUS) continued to put India (IND) to work in the fourth Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT 2024-25). Resuming at 311/6, the home side rode on Steve Smith (140 off 197) and Pat Cummins (49 off 63) to march past the 400-run mark. Notably, the pair put up a 112-run stand for the seventh wicket.
In one final flourish, the tailenders pushed the score to 474. Among notable bowling performances for Team India, pacer Jasprit Bumrah claimed four wickets (4/99) while spinner Ravindra Jadeja (3/78) managed to keep the damage in control by having three victims under his name. In reply to Australia's huge total, the visitors were in trouble early on in their innings as skipper Rohit Sharma could not bring about a change in his fortunes as an opener after having batted at No. 6 in the previous two Tests. KL Rahul who shuffled down the order, looked good for a while but lost his stumps at the stroke of tea.
Yashasvi Jaiswal (82 off 118) and Virat Kohli put up a vital 102-run stand before the former's run out induced a collapse that saw India lose three wickets for just six runs in the space of 22 balls. One of those wickets was of the nightwatchman, Akash Deep. Consequently, at Stumps on Day 2, Team India were left reeling at 164/5 with Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja at the crease. Currently, the visitors trail Australia by 310 runs.
