Australia vs England, 2nd ODI Stats Review: Steven Smith’s feat, Jason Roy’s lean run, and other stats
Steve Smith became the sixth fastest batter (328 inns) to complete 14000 international runs.
Steve Smith struck 94 while Mitchell Starc and Adam Zampa took four wickets each as Australia sealed a comprehensive victory by 72 runs over England in the second ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Saturday, November 19.
Marnus Labuschagne and Mitchell Marsh also smashed their respective fifties as the Kangaroos also clinched the series 2-0 against the recently crowned T20 World Champions with one game to go.
Talking about how the encounter panned out, newly-appointed ODI skipper Pat Cummins and his counterpart Jos Buttler both took a rest with Josh Hazlewood and Moeen Ali donning the captaincy hat.
The hosts won the toss and elected to bat first. Half-centurions from the first match, openers David Warner and Travis Head made 16 and 19 respectively. Smith, yet again, held the innings together as he amassed 94 runs off 114, missing out on a well-deserved three-figure mark.
Labuschagne (58) and Marsh (50) helped the home side in reaching a competitive total of 280/8 in 50 overs. Adil Rashid was the pick of the England bowlers for his spell of 3/57 (10).
In reply, Jason Roy’s poor form continued with the opening batter bagging a two-ball duck. Dawid Malan, who struck a solid ton in the opening game, failed to trouble the scorers as he got dismissed for a golden duck.
Phil Salt mustered 23 off 16 before falling prey to stand-in captain Hazlewood. Middle-order batters James Vince hit 60 while Sam Billings racked up 71 but couldn’t quite go on to register a big score. Starc and Zampa’s spells helped the Aussies in bundling out the opposition for just 208 in 38.5 overs. For his match-winning figures of 4/47 in eight overs, speedster Starc grabbed the Player of the Match award.
