Australia vs England, 3rd ODI Stats Review: David Warner’s first century in 68 international innings, England’s biggest defeat in ODIs, and other stats

David Warner and Travis Head shared 269 runs for the opening wicket as the duo smashed centuries to help Australia defeat England by 221 runs (D/L) in the third and final ODI in Melbourne. Warner smashed 106 while Head registered his career-best score of 152 to power the Aussies to a total of 355/5, their highest against England in the format. With the same, the hosts inflicted a clean sweep 3-0 over the recently crowned T20 World Cup champions.

Speaking about how the dead rubber panned out, captain Jos Buttler won the toss and opted to field first. Head smacked 16 fours and four maximums in 130 deliveries while Warner hit eight fours and two sixes in 102 balls. Mitchell Marsh played a cameo of 30 off 16 to take his side to a mammoth total of above 350. Pacer Olly Stone snared four scalps but went for 85 runs in his ten-over spell.

Chasing 356, out-of-form batter Jason Roy top-scored for his side with his knock of 33 as it turned out to be a one-sided affair. No other English player got going against the quality bowling line-up of the Aussies. Skipper Pat Cummins and Sean Abbott took two wickets apiece but it was spinner Adam Zampa yet again who tormented the visitors.

The leggie took figures of 4/31 in 5.4 overs as Buttler and his team got bundled out for just 142 in 31.4 overs while chasing a revised target of 364 in 48 overs. The hosts won the encounter by 221 runs (DL) at the ‘G’ to complete the whitewash. Head won the Player of the Match while Warner grabbed the Player of the Series award for his 208 runs.
