India went 1-0 up in the 5-match series of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a 295-run win in Perth.

Australia started the day under fire at 12/3 chasing 534 and were soon reduced to 17/4. Travis Head (89 off 101) began a counter-attack that only delayed the inevitable as Jasprit Bumrah (3 for 42) and Mohammed Siraj (3 for 51) kept the pressure building up. Both Mitchell Marsh and Alex Carey got defiant starts, but it couldn't amount to much as Australia slumped to a defeat that was always on the cards.

Here are the best stats from the day:

1 - India have become the first visiting team to win a Test at the Optus Stadium in Perth. All of the previous four Tests at this ground were won by hosts Australia, including the first-ever Test at this stadium against India in 2018.

5 - All 5 Tests at the Optus Stadium in Perth have been won by the team batting first.

2 - Jasprit Bumrah became the second Indian captain to win his first Test in charge in Australia. The first was Ajinkya Rahane who won his first Test in Australia as captain at Melbourne in 2020.

1 - Jasprit Bumrah's match-figures of 8 for 72 are the best by a captain in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, beating Anil Kumble's 8 for 254 at Sydney in 2008.

4 - Jasprit Bumrah's match-figures of 8 for 72 are the fourth-best ever by an Indian captain in Tests, and the second best by an Indian captain in a Test away from home.

3 - In terms of runs, this is India's third-biggest win away from home, and the biggest in a SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) country. India had win margins exceeding 300 against West Indies in 2019 and Sri Lanka in 2017, both away.

2 - This is now the second time that India have won the first Test of a series in Australia, the last time was at Adelaide in 2018.
