Afghanistan faced Australia in Match 10 of the 2025 Champions Trophy in Lahore, Pakistan. Winning the toss, Afghanistan elected to bat first and started aggressively, aiming to capitalize on the powerplay. However, Spencer Johnson struck early, dismissing Rahmanullah Gurbaz for a duck. Ibrahim Zadran and Sediqullah Atal steadied the innings, with Zadran scoring 22 before falling to Adam Zampa.

Atal showed great resilience, playing a crucial knock of 85 runs off 95 balls, but lacked support from the other end. In the death overs, Azmatullah Omarzai provided a late flourish, smashing 67 runs off 63 balls. Ben Dwarshuis was the pick of the bowlers for Australia, claiming three wickets, while Spencer Johnson and Adam Zampa chipped in with two wickets each. Afghanistan was eventually bowled out for 273 in 50 overs.

Australia began their chase aggressively, with Matthew Short scoring 20 runs before being dismissed. Meanwhile, Travis Head played a blistering knock, recording the fastest fifty in Champions Trophy history for Australia in just 34 balls. However, just as Australia was gaining momentum, rain interrupted play with the team at 109-1 in 12.5 overs.

For the DRS rule requiring at least 20 overs for a result, the match was abandoned. Australia qualified for the semi-finals, while Afghanistan’s fate now hinges on England defeating South Africa by at least 207 runs if batting first or chasing down a target within 11.1 overs (if batting second, assuming a 300-run first innings total).
