Afghanistan opener Ibrahim Zadran achieved a unique ODI first during his epic knock of 177 against England in the Champions Trophy 2025 on Wednesday, February 26. The right-handed batter oozed class at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, showcasing his exemplary talent.
Afghanistan were in a spot of bother in the do-or-die clash as they lost three wickets inside the first nine overs. However, Zadran held fort from one end while the likes of Hashmatullah Shahidi, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Mohammad Nabi gave him excellent support.
Zadran completed his century in the 37th over after facing 106 balls. In the next 39 deliveries, the 23-year-old smashed 77 runs, taking the English bowlers to the cleaners. His knock helped Afghanistan put on a commanding total of 325/7 in their 50 overs.
Zadran's knock is the highest score in Champions Trophy history and the highest-ever by an Afghanistan batter in ODIs – breaking his own record of 162 versus Sri Lanka. Still aged just 23 years and 76 days, he is now the only player in ODI history to register two 150-plus scores before the age of 24. This is a testament to his ability to convert starts into substantial scores.
The first player to score 150-plus in an ODI before turning 24 was England's Charlotte Edwards against Ireland in 1997. West Indies legend Chris Gayle was the first man to do so, nearly four years later. The highest score by anyone at this age is 232, by Amelia Kerr for New Zealand against Ireland in 2018.
Joe Root, Ben Duckett resurrect England innings after early strikes
Omarzai picked up the wicket of Phil Salt in the fourth over to draw first blood for the Blue Tigers. Skipper Shahidi introduced spin in the seventh over and it paid dividends immediately. Nabi dismissed Jamie Smith off the first delivery he bowled as England slumped to 30/2.
