Afghanistan (AFG) will play a Champions Trophy match for the first time as they will take on South Africa (SA) in Match 3 of ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The match will be held at the National Stadium in Karachi.
Both teams are coming into this tournament with contrasting forms and fortunes. Afghanistan have been making strides of late in white ball cricket, with impressive performances in the last two ICC events - the 50-over World Cup in 2023 and the 20-over one in 2024. Afghanistan have also won each of their last 3 bilateral ODI series before this tournament. Afghanistan beat Zimbabwe away and also beat both Bangladesh and South Africa in the UAE.
South Africa made it to the T20 World Cup 2024 finals and the semifinals of the ODI World Cup in 2023, but their recent form and bilateral record in the period has left a lot to be desired. In the recent tri-series held in Pakistan, the Proteas lost both their matches and did not make the final. They were also whitewashed 0-3 by Pakistan at home and lost to Afghanistan in the UAE. The one bright spot was a series win over Ireland also in the UAE.

Top player battles to watch out for in AFG vs SA:
Aiden Markram vs Rashid Khan:
Afghanistan's highest wicket-taker in this format has managed to keep Markram under a leash and has in general spelt nothing but trouble. Markram has scored just 15 runs from 31 balls while being dismissed twice by Rashid Khan at an average of 7.50 and a strike rate of 48.38.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz vs Keshav Maharaj:
Since Gurbaz's debut, no other batter has made more runs for Afghanistan in ODIs. Gurbaz is also currently the player with the most ODI centuries for Afghanistan as well. None of this seemed to matter when Maharaj dismissed Gurbaz off the only ball where the two have come across each other in an ODI - during the 2023 World Cup.
