Team New Zealand (NZ) entered the final of the Champions Trophy 2025 with an emphatic win over South Africa (SA) in the semifinal 2 of the marquee 50-over event. In what will be the last match of the tournament to be played in the official host country, Pakistan.
After winning the toss, New Zealand chose to bat first and got off to a great start. However, the steady start was disrupted by the wicket of Will Young, but Rachin Ravindra (108 off 101) and Kane Williamson (102 off 94) made a brilliant partnership of 164 to essentially take the game away from South Africa. Daryl Mitchell (49 off 37) and Glenn Phillips (49* off 27) gave the dark horses exactly what they needed in the death overs and pushed them to a monumental 362.
South Africa lost Ryan Rickelton early in the chase and got stuck. The defining moment of the chase was Temba Bavuma (56 off 71) and Rassie van der Dussen (69 off 66)' s slow but steady stand of 105. But, once Mitchell Santner (3/43) broke that stand, he and the other New Zealand bowlers kept making life difficult for the Proteas under the pressures of an ever-increasing asking rate.
David Miller (100* off 67) walked out and flayed boundaries at the death, but he was fighting a lost battle and he knew it. The southpaw's innings essentially saved South Africa the blushes of a premature all-out and a three-digit margin loss. Miller's boundaries provided some life to a dead contest as he remained unbeaten on a hundred (100* off 67) off the very last ball of the chase, but it was in vain.
