Pakistan (PAK) won the toss and elected to bat first in what turned out to be an eventful Champions Trophy 2025 match. The bowlers of the home side made an early impact, restricting New Zealand (NZ) to 73/3, and putting the batting side under pressure. However, Tom Latham joined the set batter, Will Young, and the duo stitched together a crucial 118-run partnership to stabilize the innings.
As the game entered the final overs, Glenn Phillips played a blistering knock, scoring 61 runs off just 39 balls, providing the necessary acceleration. His late fireworks propelled the Black Caps to a formidable total of 320 for the loss of five wickets. Pakistan’s bowling effort was led by Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf, who picked up two wickets each, but the rest of the attack struggled to break key partnerships.
Chasing 321, Pakistan needed a strong start, but their innings faltered early. New Zealand bowlers utilized the conditions well, and as a result, the hosts could only manage to score 22 runs in the powerplay phase. Notably, this was also the third-lowest powerplay total in the Champions Trophy history. Saud Shakeel's sluggish innings of 6 runs off 19 balls further hampered their momentum. As wickets continued to fall, Babar Azam played a sensible knock, scoring a resilient 64 off 90 balls, but the required run rate kept climbing.
Towards the latter part of the innings, Khushdil Shah provided some hope with an attacking 69 off 49 balls, injecting much-needed runs into Pakistan’s chase. However, the mounting pressure proved too much, and the Green Shirts eventually got bowled out for 260, to lose the match by 60 runs. New Zealand’s disciplined bowling attack ensured that their 320-run total remained unchallenged.
