England will host the defending champions Australia in the biggest event of Test Cricket, The Ashes in the 2023 season. Both the teams will kickstart the WTC 2023-25 cycle with the five-match series starting on June 16, 2023, at Edgbaston in Birmingham.

Australia will be coming into the contest, after being crowned the champions in the World Test Championship 2021-23, as they thrashed India by a massive margin of 209 runs. They ticked all the boxes in the WTC 2021-23 and would be looking to replicate the same in this season. Travis Head and Steven Smith showed grit in the finals with a 286-run stand despite losing three early wickets. Pat Cummins & Co will come up with a plan to encounter the aggressive English Cricket. Notably, the last time Australia won a series on English soil was way back in 2001, while they managed to draw a series in 2019 and kept the Ashes as well.

On the other hand, England will head into the series on the back of a solid win against Ireland just a couple of weeks ago. England have recalled their all-rounder Moeen Ali from his retirement and he is expected to be a part of playing XI in the first game. The addition of Ali will strengthen the already aggressive-looking batting unit. The hosts will seamlessly continue their Bazball approach in their opening encounter as they have been tasting success so far.

Speaking about the top performers of the Ashes from the current squads, Steven Smith leads the batting chart with 3044 runs at an impressive average of 59.68, smashing 11 half-centuries and centuries to his name. England’s former skipper Joe Root is next in the list with 2016 runs at an average of 38.76 and he is followed by swashbuckling Australian opener David Warner with 1888 runs at an average of 38.53 runs.

In the bowling department, England pacer, Stuart Broad, has taken 131 wickets in 64 innings at an average of 29.05 which include eight five wicket-haul and one ten-wicket haul, he is followed by his fellow teammate James Anderson with 112 wickets in the same 64 innings. The next on the list is the Australian spin-wizard Nathan Lyon with 101 wickets in 51 innings. Both England and Australia will look to start their WTC 2023-25 cycle on a positive note with a win.
