Two teams, one in the top four and the other in the bottom—Australia (AUS) and England (ENG) will face off in Match 36 of the ODI World Cup 2023 on Saturday, November 04, 2023, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Jos Buttler and his team haven't met expectations as they've lost five matches to New Zealand, Afghanistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and India. Their sole victory came against Bangladesh in Dharamsala, a team that appeared less competitive. With only two points and a net run rate of -1.652, the reigning champions England currently sit in the last position in the standings. In the bowling department, David Willey took three wickets, while Adil Rashid and Chris Woakes each picked up 2 wickets, effectively restricting India to a total of 229 runs. However, in the batting department, no one took responsibility for the chase. Joe Root and Ben Stokes were dismissed without scoring (duck) for the first time in an ODI World Cup match. Livingstone was the highest run-scorer for England, contributing 27 runs, and towards the end, David Willey remained unbeaten on 16 runs. Despite their efforts, England fell short, and their endeavours were insufficient to secure a victory.

On the other hand, Australia, after losing their first two games, made a remarkable comeback and are now in a strong position to qualify for the knockouts. David Warner is in great form, and the return of Travis Head has further strengthened the team. In their last match, the Kangaroos secured a narrow victory over the Kiwis by just 5 runs. In the batting department, Australia posted a substantial total of 388 runs, largely thanks to the outstanding opening partnership between David Warner and Travis Head, which added 175 runs. David Warner was dismissed after scoring 81 runs, and Travis Head achieved a maiden century in the ODI World Cup, contributing 109 runs. Towards the end of the innings, Pat Cummins played a power-hitting cameo, helping Australia reach the formidable target of 389 runs. In the bowling department, Adam Zampa took 3 wickets, and Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins each picked up 2 wickets, which played a crucial role in sealing the match with a 5-run victory. As a result of this win, Australia has moved up to the third position in the Points table and is looking like a strong contender for the knockout stage.
