Lethal bowling display from the duo of Luke Wood and Brydan Carse followed by steady fifty from Dawid Malan and a solid unbeaten 43 from Harry Brook helped England beat New Zealand by seven wickets in the first of four T20Is in Chester-Le -Street.

Speaking about the game, put into bat first, New Zealand couldn’t have asked for a better start as Wood was taken to the cleaners in the first over by Finn Allen, who smashed three consecutive sixes. Change of ends worked for Wood as he drew the first blood for England picking the wicket of dangerous Devon Conway for 3. Wood was then partnered by Carse, the debutant who cleaned up good looking Allen for 21 while Wood ended the short stay of Tim Seifert in the very next over.

In the 8th over, Mark Chapman was undone by a beauty from Moeen Ali, leaving New Zealand groggy at 49/4. Glenn Philips kept the score board ticking with a steady 38-ball 41 while cameos from Adam Milne (10 off 9) and Ish Sodhi (16 off 12) helped New Zealand post a decent total of 139/9 in 20 overs. For England, Carse and Wood both picked three wickets each.

Chasing 140, England lost Bairstow earlier for 4 runs as Tim Southee picked up the first wicket. Will Jacks and Dawid Malan kept the chase lively by adding 57 runs for the second wicket. Jacks played a fine cameo (22 off 12) before becoming the victim of Ish Sodhi. Harry Brook then partnered Malan as the duo went berserk against New Zealand, bowlers scoring runs for fun.

Moreover, Malan got to his 16th fifty in the course of the partnership before Lockie Ferguson dismissed him for 54 with a slower one while Harry Brook remained unbeaten on 27-ball 43. Liam Livingstone finished off the proceedings in grand style with a maximum to help England beat New Zealand by seven wickets with six overs to spare.
