Kuldeep Yadav and Ravichandran Ashwin orchestrated a dominant display, sharing nine wickets to dismantle England for just 218 on the opening day of the fifth and final Test match in Dharamshala. The former snared five scalps for 72 runs while Ashwin, playing in his 100th Test, returned with figures of 4/51. In reply, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal continued his great form with a half-century as India finished Day 1 in a commanding position at 135/1.

Talking about how the day panned out, skipper Ben Stokes won the toss and elected to bat first at the picturesque HPCA stadium. Opener Zak Crawley continued his good form as he struck 79 off 108 with 11 fours and a maximum. Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope scored 27 and 11 runs, respectively. Currently ranking at 2 with regards to the ICC Men's Test Ranking, Joe Root, was dismissed for 26 while Jonny Bairstow, who also featured in his 100th Test, managed to score just three more than what Root scored.

Captain Stokes bagged a six-ball duck while wicketkeeper-batter Ben Foakes managed 24 runs, with him being rather unfortunate with the way he got dismissed. Kuldeep also reached his landmark of 50 wickets in just 1871 deliveries being the fastest Indian to reach 50 Test dismissals in the process as the visitors got bowled out for 218 in 57.4 overs. Jaiswal then played a quickfire knock of 57 off just 58 with five fours and three sixes. Skipper Rohit Sharma also slammed an unbeaten half-century (52* off 83) while Shubman Gill remained not-out on 26. The home side will look to surpass England’s score early on Day 2 and accumulate a massive lead going into the match.

Meanwhile, here are some of the important stats and numbers from Day 1 of the 5th Test between India and England:

100 – R. Ashwin and Jonny Bairstow both appeared in their milestone 100th Test match.

1028 – Yashasvi Jaiswal reached the landmark of 1000 runs in Test cricket.

16 – Jasiwal became the second-fastest Indian to reach 1000 runs in the longest format of the game. The left-handed opening batter achieved the feat in his 16th innings while Vinod Kambli tops the chart with 14 innings.

51 – Kuldeep Yadav completed 50 wickets in the longest format of the game.

8 – Ravindra Jadeja dismissed Joe Root for the eighth time in Test matches, which is the joint-most along with Angelo Mathews and Steven Smith.

26 – Jaiswal has now smashed the most sixes (26) by an Indian against an opponent in this format. He went past Sachin Tendulkar, who had hit 25 maximums against Australia.

36.8 – Kuldeep has the second-best strike rate (36.8) by a bowler with a minimum of 50 Test wickets. George Lohmann is at the top with a strike rate of 34.1.

4 – Zak Crawley is now joint-top with Matthew Hayden for hitting the most 50-plus scores (four) by a visiting opener in a Test series in India since 2001.

712 – Jaiswal has now struck the most runs (712) by an Indian against England in a Test series. He surpassed Virat Kohli’s tally of 655 runs in the 2016 series held in India.

6003 – Jonny Bairstow achieved the milestone of 6000 runs in the Test format.

1871 – Kuldeep also became the fastest Indian to pick 50 Test scalps in terms of deliveries. He did the job in 1871 balls while Axar Patel had completed it in 2205 deliveries.
