England were dismissed for 246 in their first innings in the opening day of the first Test between India and England at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad. R Ashwin and RavindraJadeja impressed with three wickets each while Ben Stokes top scored with 70 off 88. In response, Yashasvi Jaiswal notched up a brisk fifty. As the day concluded, India trails by 127 runs, setting the stage for an excitement Test.
England won the toss and chose to bat first. Openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett started brightly, putting on a 55-run partnership before Ashwin drew first blood, dismissing Duckett for 20. Ollie Pope and Crawley followed suit, leaving England struggling at 60/3. Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow steadied the ship for England, adding 61 for the fourth wicket. However, Bairstow fell for 37 to Axar Patel, and Root was out for 29 to Ravindra Jadeja. Ben Stokes provided some resistance with a hard-fought 70 before being dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah.
In reply to England's 246, India's openers Rohit Sharma and Jaiswal made a confident start, putting on 80 in 13 oversbefore Rohit fell for 24 to Jack Leach. Jaiswal, however, continued to bat positively, reaching a well-deserved half-century and remaining unbeaten on 76 at stumps alongside Shubman Gill (14*) as India ended the day trailing by 127 runs.

4016 - Joe Root became the first player to score 4000 runs in the World Test Championship (WTC).
2555 - Root has become the player with the most runs in the history of India-England Test series, surpassing the previous record of 2535 runs held by Sachin Tendulkar. Root has also become the joint-highest run-scorer against India in Test cricket, tying Ricky Ponting's record with 2555 runs.
6 - KL Rahul became the sixth Indian to represent India in 50 matches in each format of the game. Only MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ashwin have played 50 matches for India in all three formats.
2 - This is the second time India have been without Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Ajinkya Rahane in the playing XI. The previous time India fielded a Test team without any of the three was against West Indies at Eden Gardens in 2011.
5 - Jack Leach has now dismissed Rohit Sharma for five times.
