Magnificent 196 from Ollie Pope and a stunning 7/62 spell from Tom Hartley propelled England to a 28-run victory over India at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad in the first Test Match of England's tour of India, 2024.

Early on the day, Ollie Pope reached his 150. He and Rehan Ahmed then added 64 runs for the seventh wicket before Ahmed fell to Jasprit Bumrah. Tom Hartley joined Pope to put on another 80 runs for the eighth wicket until Hartley was dismissed by Ravichandran Ashwin. Pope reached 196 before being bowled by Bumrah, and England was eventually bowled out for 420.

India began their second innings chasing 231. Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed for 15 runs, followed by a duck from Shubman Gill. Wickets fell regularly, and at one point, India were 119/7. However, Siraj, Bharath, and Ravi Ashwin added a valuable 57-run partnership for the eighth wicket. Bharath fell for 28 to Tom Hartley, and Ashwin followed him soon after for the same score. Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah scored 6 and 12 runs respectively, but India ended up bowled out for 202-10, losing by 28 runs. Tom Hartley was the pick of the bowlers for England with 7-62. Ollie Pope, with his brilliant 196, was awarded Player of the Match.
