India looking to level the series set the tone on Day 1 of the second Test against England. Openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal provided a solid start, but it was the latter's unbeaten century (179*) that powered India to a commanding 336/6 at Stumps.

India won the toss and elected to bat at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, Visakhapatnam. Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal got off to a solid start, putting on 40 runs for the first wicket before debutant spinner Shoaib Bashir dismissed Sharma for 14. Shubman Gill also chipped in with 34 runs, but Shreyas Iyer and Jaiswal took the score forward with a 90-run partnership.

Iyer fell victim to Tom Hartley, but Jaiswal continued to dominate, reaching his century and eventually ending the day unbeaten on 179, his innings laced with five sixes and 17 fours. Ravichandran Ashwin provided support with an unbeaten five as India finished the day at 336/6. For England, Shoaib Bashir and Rehan Ahmed claimed two wickets each, while James Anderson and Tom Hartley picked up one apiece.
