India vs England 2024, 3rd Test, Day 1 Stats Review: Sarfaraz Blazes Fifty on Debut, Rohit Sharma's Anchor innings and other stats

Rohit Sharma becomes the oldest Indian captain to score centuries across all three formats of the game.

Day 1 of the Third Test against England initially saw the visitors dominate, but Ravindra Jadeja and Rohit Sharma staged a remarkable rescue mission, forging a strong partnership that powered India to a commanding 326/5 at stumps. 

Early in the game, India won the toss and elected to bat. Yashavi Jaiswal started well but unfortunately couldn't build momentum and was dismissed for 10 runs. He was followed by Shubman Gill, and Rajat Patidar, who all lost their wickets in quick succession, leaving India reeling at 33/3 after losing their top three batters. However,Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja came to the rescue with a remarkable 204-run partnership. Sharma played a skipper's knock, scoring a brilliant 131 before being dismissed by England fast bowler Mark Wood. Jadeja continued his dominant form, finishing the day unbeaten on 110. Debutant Sarfaraz Khan impressed with a quick fifty but was unfortunately run out by Mark Wood. Team India ended the day on a strong note at 326/5 with Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav at the crease.

 100 - Ben Stokes played in his 100th Test, becoming the 16th England player and 76th player overall to reach this milestone.

 2 - Rohit Sharma has smashed 80 sixes in Test cricket and became the Indian batter with the second-most sixes. He surpasses MS Dhoni's record of 78 sixes and is now only behind Virender Sehwag, who holds the record for the most sixes by an Indian batter in Tests with 90. 

 212 - Rohit Sharma with 212 sixes as captain for India, holds the record for the most sixes by an Indian captain, surpassing MS Dhoni's previous milestone of 211 sixes. 

 131 - Rohit Sharma's 131 is his second-highest score in a Test innings against England. 

 36Y 291d - At 36 years and 291 days, Rohit Sharma became the oldest Indian Test captain to score a century, surpassing Vijay Hazare's record of 36 years and 278 days set against England at Brabourne in 1951. 

 42 - Rohit Sharma has smashed 42 centuries in international cricket as an opener, the joint third-most by any batter. He shares this record with Chris Gayle, who also has 42 centuries as an opener. David Warner leads the list with 49 centuries, followed by Sachin Tendulkar. 

 4 - The 'Hitman' has smashed 8 centuries in the World Test Championship, jointly ranking fourth with Babar Azam for the most centuries scored in the competition. Joe Root leads the pack with 12 centuries, followed by Marnus Labuschagne (11), Kane Williamson (9), and Steven Smith (9). 

 4606 - With 4,606 runs, Rohit Sharma has become the fifth-highest run-scorer for India as captain across all formats, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar's previous record of 4,508 runs. 

 2 - Sarfaraz Khan smashed a fifty off 48 balls, becoming the joint-second fastest Indian to reach a half-century on Test debut. He shares this record with Hardik Pandya, who achieved the feat against Sri Lanka in Galle in 2017. The fastest fifty on debut for India remains  Yuvraj of Patiala's 42-ball against England in Chennai in 1934. 

 3003 - Ravindra Jadeja completed 3000 Test Runs. 

 3 - Ravindra Jadeja has become the third Indian player, after Kapil Dev and Ravichandran Ashwin, to achieve the double of 3000 Test runs and 200 Test wickets.
