Hosts India swept England away in the first T20I in Kolkata, to take a 1-0 series lead in the five-match series. The action will now move to MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, where the Men in Blue haven't played a T20I since 2018 - which is also the last time that the venue hosted a T20I of any kind.

In the first T20I, India won the toss and put England in and immediately reaped the rewards. Pacer Arshdeep Singh removed Phil Salt for a duck and then removed Ben Duckett in the powerplay itself. England skipper Jos Buttler was unperturbed and continued in his usual attacking way. But India's spinners spun a web in the middle that saw no other batsman capable of supporting Buttler. England were eventually done in for a below-par total of 132

Sanju Samson set to work straight away by tearing Gus Atkinson apart for 22 runs in the second over but left soon after. It looked like India might have been in trouble after Jofra Archer prised out Samson and Suryakumar Yadav in the same over, but Abhishek Sharma took over. Abhishek's blitzkrieg 79 from just 34 balls including 8 sixes gave India the win with as many as 43 balls to spare. Moving on, visitors England will be looking to bounce back and square what is already looking like an exciting series.
