India vs England, 5th Test Day 3 Stats Review: James Anderson’s 700th wicket, R Ashwin’s feat and other stats

Ravichandran Ashwin, playing in his landmark 100^th Test, spun his web as he picked up a five-wicket haul against England on Day three of the fifth and final Test match in Dharamsala. Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav also bagged two wickets each as India defeated the English side by an innings and 64 runs to clinch the match and the series by a handsome margin of 4-1.

Speaking about how day three panned out, veteran James Anderson etched his name into the history books by bagging his 700^th wicket in the oldest format of the game. The 41-year-old pacer did the job by taking Kuldeep’s wicket. Notably, he became the first seamer to reach the milestone of 700 scalps in Test cricket. Legendary spin bowlers Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne are ahead of Anderson with 800 and 708 scalps, respectively.

Coming back to the game, the home side managed a massive total of 477 in their first innings, taking a lead of 259 runs. In reply, Joe Root played a lone hand of 84 off 128 which included 12 fours while wickets kept falling at the other end. Ashwin dismissed Stokes for the 13^th time in this format as the latter ended a disastrous series, managing only 199 runs in ten innings.

Jonny Bairstow played a quickfire knock of 39 off 31 with three fours and as many maximums before falling prey to Kuldeep. Ashwin ended with figures of 5/77 in his 14-over spell as the visitors got bowled out for just 195.

For his seven wickets in the game, Kuldeep grabbed the Player of the Match award. Youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal won the Player of the Series award for smashing a record 712 runs in five Tests.

700 – James Anderson reached the landmark of 700 wickets in Test cricket. He became the third bowler after legendary Muthiah Muralitharan (800) and Shane Warne (700) to achieve the feat. Notably, Anderson is the first pacer to do the job.

36 – R Ashwin has now taken the most five-wicket hauls (36) for India in Tests. He surpassed Anil Kumble’s tally of 35 hauls.

21 – Joe Root has now smashed the most 50-plus scores (21) against India in the longest format of the game. He went past Ricky Ponting’s tally of 20.

19.9 – Ben Stokes scored only 199 runs in ten innings at a poor average of 19.9 with just one half-century in this series.

13 – Ashwin dismissed Stokes for the 13^th time in Test cricket, the most by an Indian bowler against any batter. Kapil Dev had accounted for Mudassar Nazar’s wicket 12 times.

178 – India have won and lost 178 Test matches each out of the 579 played. One encounter ended up in a tie while the remaining 222 were in a draw.

9/128 – Spinner Ashwin registered the best-match figures of 9/128 by a bowler in his 100^th Test. Muralitharan took figures of 9/141 against Bangladesh in Chattogram in 2006.

1 – Ashwin became the first bowler to pick up a five-wicket haul in his debut and 100^th Test.

36 – Ashwin is now also joint-third with Sir Richard Hadlee for picking up 36 five-wicket hauls in Test matches. Muralitharan and Warne are in the first and second positions with 67 and 37 hauls, respectively.

1272 – Root has now hit the second-most runs (1272) by a visiting batter in Tests in India. He surpassed Alastair Cook’s tally of 1235 runs. Clive Lloyd is at the top with 1359 runs.

114 – With 114 scalps against England, Ashwin has joint-most wickets (114) by an Indian against a Test opponent. It is Ashwin himself who also has 114 scalps against Australia.
