India vs New Zealand 1st Test, Day 3 Stats Review: Most runs by an Indian in Test cricket and other stats

New Zealand and India played out an even contest on the third day of the first Test at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Friday, October 18.

New Zealand started the day well ahead, but soon collapsed from 180 for 3 to 233 for 7 with Ravindra Jadeja (3 for 72) taking two in the collapse. It looked like New Zealand would be done, but Rachin Ravindra (134 off 157) and Tim Southee (65 off 73) put up an eighth-wicket stand of 137 in a little under 22 overs to completely derail India. The two batted at breackneck speed and put New Zealand in the driver's seat. Ravindra continued to put the ball out of the ground even after Southee was dismissed, but New Zealand were bowled out for 402 and finished with a whopping 356-run first innings lead. 

India came to bat in the final session determined to play very active cricket. Yashasvi Jaiswal (35 off 52) and Rohit Sharma (52 off 63) started well and put up 72, but Jaiswal was stumped giving Ajaz Patel the charge. Virat Kohli (70 off 102) walked out at No. 3 just like he had in the first innings and took his time to settle down, taking 15 balls to get off the mark. Rohit Sharma at the other end went on the aggressive but was dismissed in a very unfortunate fashion. Rohit chopped on a delivery from Ajaz Patel on to his stumps while defending.

Sarfaraz Khan (70* off 78) then continued with the aggressive approach putting up 136 with Kohli in just 27 overs. On the very last ball of the day, Kohli edged one from Glenn Phillips to the keeper Tom Blundell and India ended the day at 231/3, still trailing by 125. It is still not clear who will walk out at No. 5 for India.

2012 - The last time a New Zealand batter scored a Test century in India. It was Ross Taylor who did it at Bengaluru as well 12 years ago. 

6 - During his swashbuckling effort, Tim Southee hit four sixes and surpassed Virender Sehwag to become the player with the sixth most sixes in Test history with 93 sixes. Current England skipper Ben Stokes leads the list with 131 sixes.

4 - This was Rachin Ravindra's fourth hundred in India in international cricket. Among visiting players aged 25 or less, only Everton Weekes made four hundreds in India. 

1 - Tim Southee and Rachin Ravindra's partnership of 137 is the highest for the eighth wicket against India in India in Tests. 

4 - The first innings lead of 356 is the joint-fourth highest that India have ever conceded in a Test at home.

8 - Rohit Sharma equalled Brian Lara's tally of 88 sixes in Test cricket and moved to joint eighth on the all-time list during his innings. 

4 - During his 70, Virat Kohli became the fourth Indian player to score 9000 runs in Test cricket. He took 197 innings to the milestone, which is the most among those four players.

2 - A total of 453 runs were scored in the entire day's play. This is the second highest amount in a single day in India. The highest is 470 scored on the second day of the Brabourne Test between India and Sri Lanka in 2009.
