New Zealand did almost the unthinkable by beating India in the first Test at Bengaluru and taking a 1-0 series lead. Things started moving New Zealand's way after India chose to bat under overcast skies and were duly bowled out for 46.

Their lowest total at home. New Zealand kept making steady gains, but the highlight of their innings was a quickfire partnership of 137 for the 8th wicket between centurion Rachin Ravindra and former skipper Tim Southee. New Zealand eventually finished with a first innings lead of 356 runs.

India's response started fairly well with two of their top three getting fifties. Commendably, the number four man, Sarafaraz Khan, after getting a duck in the first innings, followed up with a top-notch 150. Besides, Rishabh Pant missed out on a century after he was agonisingly dismissed on 99. India's second innings came undone as they lost their last 7 wickets for just 58 runs setting a target of 107 that New Zealand chased down with 8 wickets to spare. It was New Zealand's first test win in India since 1988.
