Both India (IND) and New Zealand (NZ) are the top two teams in this tournament and the most in-form squads so far. None of them has suffered a loss in any of their matches. They will face each other in Match number 21 of the ongoing edition of the World Cup. The match is scheduled to take place on Sunday, October 22nd, 2023, at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala.

Discussing the finalists of the last two World Cups in 2015 and 2019, the Kiwis have started their campaign in typical New Zealand fashion. Known for their consistent performance in ICC events, they have secured victories in their first four fixtures against England, the Netherlands, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. Notably, they have not only won all four matches but have done it very convincingly.

Even without their regular captain, Kane Williamson, who is sidelined with a thumb injury, the Kiwis, led by Tom Latham, have made a strong start to their World Cup campaign, winning four consecutive matches and claiming the top spot in the table. In their previous match, New Zealand defeated Afghanistan by a significant margin of 149 runs. Will Young, Tom Latham, and Glenn Phillips scored half-centuries each, contributing to a total of 288 runs in 50 overs. In the bowling department, Mitchell Santner and Lockie Ferguson took three wickets each, while Trent Boult claimed two, helping to secure the match with a 149-run victory.

On the other hand, the 2011 ODI World Cup winners, the Men in Blue, are also in prime form, having won their first four matches in this tournament, and they are level with New Zealand with eight points. They have a solid track record in recent ICC events, securing victories in their opening four fixtures against Australia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Just like the Kiwis, they have not only won all four matches but have done it comfortably and convincingly. In their last match, the Men in Blue defeated Bangladesh by a significant margin of seven wickets. In the bowling department, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj took two wickets each with brilliant swing.

Ravindra Jadeja also picked up two wickets with an excellent economy, helping to restrict the Bangla Tigers to 256 runs in 50 overs. While chasing the target, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill provided a solid start for India. Rohit scored 48 runs, and Gill registered his maiden half-century in the ODI World Cup. However, it was King Kohli's show that stole the spotlight, as Kohli smashed his first century while chasing in an ODI World Cup and reached the milestone with a six, which was also the winning shot. KL Rahul remained unbeaten on 34 runs, and Kohli scored an unbeaten 103, guiding India to a 7-wicket victory.

Both teams have a long-standing ICC rivalry, with India failing to defeat New Zealand in ICC white-ball events after the 2003 World Cup. Their last encounter was in the 2019 semi-final of the ODI World Cup, where New Zealand emerged victorious. In this upcoming match, both teams will strive to secure a win and clear their path to the semifinals.
