A new look Indian team scripted a thrilling two-run win over Sri Lanka under Hardik Pandya. Four fer from debutant Shivam Mavi helped India win a thriller against the Asian Champions in the first T20I of 2023.
Put into bat first, the hosts got off to a flyer, scoring 26 runs in first two overs with Ishan Kishan smashing Kasun Rajitha for 17 runs in the first over. India were in trouble in the middle overs after losing quick wickets but thenDeepak Hooda and Axar Patel joined hands to rescue the Indian batting. The duo put together 68 runs for the 6thwicket and made sure Team India posted a competitive total of 162/5 in 20 overs
In reply, Sri Lankan top order batters fell cheaply to Indian fast bowlers with the score of 68/5 inside 11 overs. Then came the captain, Dasun Shanaka who took the chase towards Sri Lanka's side. He smashed 45 (27) with three sixes and two fours. He was caught to Yuzvendra Chahal at covers when the visitors needed 40 runs in last four overs.
Chamika Karunaratne carried from thereon and kept going till the last ball. Sri Lanka eventually lost by 2 runs. Shivam Mavi the debutant was pick of bowlers with four wickets and was ably supported by Harshal Patel, Umran Malik picking up two wickets each.
