India's batters feasted on runs, Deepti Sharma delivered a heroic all-round performance, and England crumbled under the pressure as India secured a dominant 347-run victory in the Test match at Dr. DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai in the one-off women's Test.
India won the toss and elected to bat first and despite losing Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma early, a a remarkable 115-run partnership from debutantes Shuba Satheesh (69) and Jemimah Rodrigues (68) rescued India. After the duo's dismissal, the momentum continued with Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and Yastika Bhatia stitching a century stand. However, an unfortunate run-out of Harmanpreet at 49 ended their partnership there.
Bhatia kept the scoreboard ticking, compiling 66 runs while Deepti Sharma joined the party with a 66-run cameo, and Sneha Rana contributed 30. India were eventually bowled out for 428 in the first innings as Lauren Bell and Sophie Ecclestone bagged three wickets each while Kate Cross, Nat Sciver-Brunt and Charlie Dean where picked up one each.
In response, England's batters failed to live up to expectations. Only Sciver-Brunt managed a significant score, while the rest of the order crumbled as Deepti bagged a fifer for just seven runs while Sneh Rana chipped in with two wickets. Renuka Singh and Pooja Vastrakar also got among the wickets to dismiss England for just 136.
Starting with a healthy lead of 292 runs, the Indian openers provided a solid foundation, stitching a 61-run stand before Ecclestone intervened, dismissing Smriti Mandhana for 26, followed by the wicket of Shafali Verma, who was lost her wicket to Dean for 33. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, skipper Harmanpreet anchored the innings with a composed 44, guiding India to 186/6 at the end of the day 2. Recognizing their advantage, India declared soon after, setting England a mammoth target of 479.
England struggled again, collapsing to 131 all out as only Heather Knight (21) and Charlie Dean (20) showed any resistance. Deepti spearheaded the demolition with a stunning 4/32, while Vastrakar (3/23), Rajeshwari Gayakwad (2/20), and Renuka Singh (1/30) also chipped in to dismantle the English batting lineup. Deepti's heroics earned her the well-deserved Player of the Match award as she scored 67 and 20 with the bat and registered figures of 5/7 and 4/32.
