As IPL 2024 approaches the halfway mark, Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bengaluru engaged in a thriller at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Opting to bowl first, RCB were treated to a deluge of strokeplay in the powerplay itself by Phil Salt (48 off 14), but after he departed, wickets fell at regular intervals. Skipper Shreyas Iyer (50 off 36) tried to hold the innings together, and because of a quiet show with the bat by Sunil Narine, Rinku Singh and Andre Russell, it took a cameo by Ramandeep Singh (24 off 9) to take KKR to 222.
RCB started quick in their chase before Virat Kohli was dismissed in controversial fashion and Faf du Plessis followed. Will Jacks (55 off 32) and Rajat Patidar (52 off 23) kept the tempo up before being dismissed by Andre Russell ( 3 for 25) in the same over.
None of RCB's subsequent batters looked like they were getting on top of the required run rate until Karn Sharma (20 off 7) hit Mitchell Starc for three sixes in the last over when he was dismissed with RCB needing three runs off the last two balls. Lockie Ferguson was then run out attempting a second run on the last ball leaving RCB short of the mammoth 222 by just one run.
