In a very back-and-forth encounter, RCB went to a 6th consecutive win and entered miraculously into the playoffs. Rain threats always seemed to loom over Match No. 68 RCB vs CSK at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium and it did rain briefly. But that did not dampen RCB's charge in this season.
Put into bat first, RCB started aggressively in the first few overs, but on a pitch that seemed to turn more than reasonably acceptable, CSK's spinners pulled it back in the powerplay. But both Virat Kohli(47 off 29) and Faf du Plessis(54 off 39) took the spinners on after the powerplay. Rajat Patidar(41 off 23) continued the way he has been, and then Cameron Green(38* off 17) with support from Dinesh Karthik and Glenn Maxwell put RCB up to 219 in a game they needed to win by 18 runs or more to qualify for the playoffs. Both Maheesh Theekshana(0 for 25) and Mitchell Santner(1 for 23) restricted RCB.
Glenn Maxwell(1 for 25) removed Ruturaj Gaikwad on the first ball of CSK's innings, but Rachin Ravindra(61 off 37) and Ajinkya Rahane(33 off 22) tried to rebuild it after Daryl Mitchell fell cheaply too. But after Rahane's dismissal, it became difficult for CSK as Shivam Dube struggled and that ultimately resulted in a mix-up that got Rachin Ravindra dismissed.
With the match looking out of CSK's reach, Ravindra Jadeja(42* off 22) and MS Dhoni(25 off 13) seemed to turn back the clock. While Swapnil Singh(0 for 13) kept it tight in the middle, CSK went from a situation where they needed 56 runs off the last three overs to qualify, to 17 runs off the last over to qualify. Yash Dayal(2 for 42) was sent for a six by Dhoni's first ball but staged a comeback that alongside getting Dhoni out, defended 11 from the last 5 balls to ensure qualification for RCB.
Let's look at some significant records from this match:
