MI vs KKR, IPL 2023 Match 22 Stats Review: Knight Rider’s woes in Wankhede continue, Venkatesh Iyer ends KKR’s century drought and other stats
KKR has now lost 23 out of the 32 matches played against MI in the history of IPL.
Venkatesh Iyer’s magnificent maiden T20 century went in vain as Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by a margin of five wickets in Match No. 22 of the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium. The left-hander became the first KKR batter to smash a century since Brendon McCullum’s mind-boggling knock of 158* in the first-ever IPL match way back in the year 2008.
Talking about how the game panned out, Rohit Sharma suffered a stomach bug as Suryakumar Yadav donned the captaincy hat for MI. He won the toss and elected to field first on a doubleheader afternoon game. Openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and N Jagadeesan scored eight and zero runs respectively as KKR got off to a shaky start. Batting at no. three, Venkatesh slammed 104 off just 51 balls with the help of six fours and nine maximums. Courtesy of his innings, KKR managed to post a total of 185/6 in their allotted 20 overs. Duan Jansen had a forgettable debut as he conceded 53 runs and claimed just one wicket in his four-over spell.
Chasing 186, Rohit came out as an impact player and got dismissed for 20. Ishan Kishan kept going as he struck 58 off just 25 deliveries, which included five fours and as many sixes. Stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav returned to form as he amassed 43 off 25 deliveries. Youngster Tilak Varma scored 30 while Tim David remained not out on 24 as the home side registered back-to-back victories in IPL 2023. KKR’s Wankhede hoodoo continued as they lost their ninth match against MI out of the ten matches played in the stadium. On account of his spectacular century, Venkatesh grabbed the Player of the Match award.
