MS Dhoni is the seventh-highest run-scorer in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and has so far batted only three times in the 2024 season. The veteran cricketer is the only one to have played in 11 finals in the history of the tournament. The former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper led his side to their fifth title in the 2023 edition.

The CSK wicketkeeper-batter has scored 39 runs at a strike rate of 185.71 in the five matches he has played so far in the ongoing season. In the first two games of the season, Dhoni did not get a chance to bat bat. But their third game against Delhi Capitals was a treat for the fans as he scored an unbeaten 37 off just 16 in a losing cause. His knock included four boundaries and three sixes, reminding everyone about his ability to play the quickfire innings. In the last two games against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders, Dhoni did come out to bat but was unbeaten on just one run in both games.

Dhoni has been one of the most destructive batters and one of the best finishers of the game. Under the new captaincy of Ruturaj Gaikwad, the Chennai-based franchise has won three out of their five games and sits third in the IPL 2024 points table. CSK are gearing up for their upcoming match against Mumbai Indians (MI) on Sunday, April 14 at the historic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

MS Dhoni's overall record against MI:

Total Matches Played: 41

Runs Scored: 748

Batting Average: 35.61

Batting Strike Rate: 129.18

50/100: 3/0

Best Score: 63*

Memorable performance against Mumbai Indians

MS Dhoni’s best knock against MI came in the eliminator game of the 2012 edition. CSK were asked to bat first and had a miserable start, losing Murali Vijay and Suresh Raina in the second over. However, S. Badrinath and Michael Hussey steadied the innings, providing a platform for MS Dhoni to hit from the first ball. Dhoni smashed 51 runs off just 20 balls, including his signature helicopter shot off Lasith Malinga's bowling. Dwayne Bravo's handy cameo of 33* off 14 helped CSK post a total of 187/5 in their 20 overs. MI struggled to match this daunting total, managing only 149/9 in their 20 overs, ultimately being out of the tournament. Dhoni's sensational knock earned him the Player of the Match award.

Key Battles for MS Dhoni against Mumbai Indians

Jasprit Bumrah: A battle between one of the best finishers of the game with the modern-day bowling genius. If Dhoni is CSK’s most dangerous batter in the end, Bumrah is the go-to-bowler of MI. The two share a fierce rivalry in the IPL. While Bumrah has dismissed Dhoni three times, the latter has scored 60 runs off 61 balls (98.36 strike rate).

Gerald Coetzee: Dhoni comes at the end of the innings and MI will be throwing the responsibility towards their other pacer to get them crucial breakthroughs. His record against the pacers is good but MI could bring in Gerald Coetzee to deceive the veteran with his pace and variations. The right-arm quick has so far picked eight wickets in the season.
