The Black Caps roared to a dominant 46-run victory over Pakistan in the opening encounter of their T20I series at Eden Park in Auckland. Skipper Kane Williamson's classy 57 off 42 and Daryl Mitchell's explosive 61 off 27 powered New Zealand to a formidable 226/8, while Tim Southee's superb bowling with figures of 4/25 restricted Pakistan to 180/10 in their chase. The excitement now shifts to Seddon Park in Hamilton for the second T20I on Sunday, January 14th, 2024. Speaking about how the first game panned out, winning the toss, Pakistan, having won the toss, opted to field first, hoping to capitalize on the Eden Park pitch. Shaheen Afridi struck early, dismissing Devon Conway for a duck.

However, Williamson and Finn Allen steadied the ship with a 78-run partnership, Allen departing for 34 in the 5th over. Undeterred, Williamson reached his fifty before falling to Abbas Afridi. Mitchell then took centre stage, bludgeoning 61 off just 27 deliveries, aided by valuable contributions from the lower order, to propel New Zealand to 226/8 in their 20 overs.

Pakistan's chase started brightly, with Babar Azam leading the charge with a fluent 57 off 35. Saim Ayub (27), Mohammad Rizwan (25), and Iftikhar Ahmed (24) chipped in as well, but the middle order failed to sustain the momentum. Southee's bowling kept Pakistan in trouble, and they were eventually bowled out for 180/10 in 18 overs, thereby falling short by 46 runs.
