ODI World 2023, Match 39, Australia vs Afghanistan Stats Review: Glenn Maxwell's fastest double ton, Australia's highest WC chase and other stats

A sensational double hundred from Glenn Maxwell helped Australia beat Afghanistan by three wickets from the brink of a mere defeat in the 39th match of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 at the Wankhede Stadium. Glenn Maxwell smashed the first double century in the history of run-chase to help Australia confirm their semi-final berth. They will now appear in their ninth semi-finals in the ODI World Cup. 

Speaking about the game, Afghanistan won the toss, and without any hesitation, Hashmatullah Shahidi opted to bat first. The openers got off to a good start as they scored 38 runs for the first wicket before Rahmanullah Gurbaz nicked one to the wicketkeeper of Josh Hazlewood for 21 runs.

However, Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmat Shah kept the scoreboard ticking with an 83-run stand before Glenn Maxwell provided the breakthrough by dismissing Rahmat Shah for 30 while Zadran and Hashmatullah Shahidi added 52 runs for the third wicket. Starc knocked over Shahidi for 26. Meanwhile, Zadran went on to register his fifth ODI hundred and the first by an Afghanistan batter in the ODI World Cup. 

Zadran remained unbeaten on 129 while cameos from Azmatullah Omarzai (22 off 18) and Rashid Khan (35 off 18) down the order helped Afghanistan post their highest total of 291/5 in the ODI World Cup. Josh Hazlewood was the pick of bowlers for Australia as he ended his spell at 2/39 in nine overs.

Chasing 292, Australia got off to an awful start as they lost Travis Head cheaply for a two-ball duck as Naveen-ul-Haq drew first blood for Afghanistan. David Warner and Mitchell Marsh added 43 runs for the second wicket before Naveen trapped Marsh in front for 24 runs while Omarzai stuck twice in two balls knocking over David Warner and edging Josh Inglis for a golden duck as Australia slipped further to 49/4.

Afghanistan bowlers were all over the Australian line-up picking wickets at regular intervals as Rashid Khan dismissed Marcus Stoinis and Mitchell Starc, while a direct hit from Rahmat Shah saw Marnus Labuschagne’s dismissal, leaving the five-time champions in trouble at 91/7. Glenn Maxwell and the skipper kept the chase lively with a scintillating partnership as Afghanistan bowlers were put under pressure for the first time in the game, from there on, it was Glenn Maxwell who single-handedly took Afghanistan bowlers to the cleaners as he notched up the double century and added 202 runs with Pat Cummins to beat Afghanistan by margin of three wickets as they chased down 292 runs.
