A disciplined bowling display from Gerald Coetzee, followed by a match-winning knock from Van der Dussen, helped South Africa defeat Afghanistan by five wickets in the 42nd Match of the Ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 in Ahmedabad.

Afghanistan won the toss and chose to bat. Keshav Maharaj drew first blood for South Africa, dismissing Rahmanullah Gurbaz for 25 runs. Afghanistan lost wickets quickly and were left at 45-3. Rahmat Shah and Azmatullah Omarzai rebuilt the innings with a 49-run partnership, but Shah was dismissed for 26 runs. Omarzai kept the scoreboard ticking and reached his fifty, finishing unbeaten on 97, with seven fours and three sixes. Noor Ahmad scored 26 runs, but the rest of the batters were dismissed cheaply, and Afghanistan were bowled out for 244 runs in 50 overs. Gerald Coetzee was the pick of the South African bowlers, with 4 wickets for 44 runs in 10 overs.

Chasing 245, South Africa got off to a good start with Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma adding 64 runs for the first wicket. Mujeeb Ur Rahman broke the partnership by dismissing Bavuma for 23 runs, followed by Mohammed Nabi removing de Kock for 41 runs. Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram steadied the innings with a 50-run stand. Markram was soon dismissed for 25 runs, but van der Dussen continued his fine form and reached his half-century. He scored an unbeaten 76 off 95 balls, with six fours and one six. He got valuable support from David Miller (24) and Andile Phehlukwayo (39) and guided South Africa to a five-wicket win with 15 balls to spare. Van der Dussen was awarded the Player of the Match for his match-winning knock.
