History repeats itself in the World Cup game but it was Australia this time, who held on the nerve to defeat their Tasmanian rival New Zealand by a margin of five runs in what was a high-scoring thriller in match number 27 of ICC ODI World Cup 2023 at HPCA in Dharamsala. Travis Head’s return saw a century which helped Australia post 350+ scores for the third consecutive time.

Speaking about the game, New Zealand won the toss and opted to field. Australian openers got off to a flier as the New Zealand bowlers were taken to the cleaners scoring 175 runs in 19.1 overs. Travis Head (109) announced his return with a splendid century while David Warner continued his rich vein of run-scoring before getting dismissed on 81.

The middle-order batters got starts but were not able to convert them to big ones while Glenn Maxwell (41 off 24), Josh Inglis (38 off 28) and Pat Cummins (37 off 14) came up with scintillating cameos to help Australia post 388 in 49.2 overs. For New Zealand, Glenn Phillips was the pick of bowlers for his spell of 3/37 in 10 overs while Trent Boult picked three wickets for 77 runs in 10 overs.

Chasing 389, New Zealand too got off to a great start with Devon Conway toying with Australian bowlers with the score of 61 inside 8 overs while Will Young got dismissed for 32. Rachin Ravindra scored a terrific century while Daryl Mitchell scored a quick-fire 54 to keep New Zealand in the chase as the duo added 96 runs for the third wicket.

Jimmy Neesham down the order kept the chase going with a stunning 39-ball 58 which included 6 boundaries. Adam Zampa chipped in with wickets at regular intervals as he ended his spell on 3/74 in his 10 overs. With 19 runs to get in the final over, Mitchell Starc held his nerve and defended the total, eventually defeating New Zealand by 5 runs.
