ODI World Cup 2023, Match 3, BAN vs AFG Stats Review: Mehidy's all-round show, Shakib's bowling brilliance and other stats
Mehidy became the second Bangladesh to achieve the double of scoring a half-century and picking three wickets in a World Cup match.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz delivered a remarkable all-rounder performance while Shakib Al Hasan bowled highly economically in Bangladesh's six-wicket win in Dharamsala against Afghanistan on October 7. After the bowlers did their work, Najmul Hossain Shanto scored his fourth consecutive fifty-plus score in ODIs while Mehidy scored one of his own to take Bangladesh to the target.
After Shakib won the toss and elected to bowl, Afghanistan openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran got off to a blazing start, putting up 47 runs in just 8.2 overs. Ibrahim's innings came to an end when Shakib dismissed him for a 22. Shakib again dismissed Rahmat Shah on 18 runs in 25 balls. After that wickets kept falling on regular intervals as Shakib and Mehidy took three wickets each while Shoriful Islam took two to restrict Afghanistan to156 in 37.2 overs.
In their chase, Bangladesh lost two wickets in early stage as Tanzid Hasan was runout for 5 while Litton Das was bowled by Farooqi for 13. But after that, Shanto and Mehidy formed a good partnership of 97 runs. Before departure, Shanto scored 59 off 73 and Miraz scored 57 in 73. For his outstanding all-round performance, Mehidy earned the Player of the Match award.
