A stunning bowling performance from Ravindra Jadeja, followed by a masterclass batting display from the duo of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, helped India defeat Australia by a margin of six wickets in match number five of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023.

Speaking about the game, Australia won the toss and opted to bat first on a dry Chennai surface. They lost Mitchell Marsh as Bumrah drew the first blood for India. David Warner and Steven Smith kept the scoreboard ticking as they forged a 69-run stand for the second wicket before Kuldeep Yadav provided a breakthrough by picking Warner caught and bowled.

From thereon, Indian bowlers were right on the money as they picked up wickets at regular intervals. Ravindra Jadeja picked up three wickets in the middle, first, he cleaned up Smith with a peach, then nicked Labuschagne to the keeper and trapped Alex Carey in front for a duck while Kuldeep knocked over dangerous Glenn Maxwell. Handy contributions from lower down the order helped Australia post 199 in 50 overs. For India, Jadeja was the pick of bowlers for his spell of 3/28 in 10 overs, while Bumrah and Kuldeep picked two wickets each.

Chasing 200, India had an awful start as Mitchell Starc struck early on, picking Ishan Kishan for a golden duck, while Josh Hazlewood dismissed Rohit for a duck with beauty and Shreyas Iyer too got dismissed by Hazlewood without troubling the scorers, leaving India in a spot on bother at 2/3.

The duo of KL Rahul and Virat Kohli led the recovery with a splendid batting display, adding a partnership of 165 for the fourth wicket. Mitchell Marsh dropped a sitter on Virat Kohli when he was on 12; other than that, both batters looked solid in the chase. Kohli amassed 85 runs, while Rahul remained unbeaten on 97. Hardik Pandya contributed 11 runs in the end, adding 34 runs with KL Rahul for the fifth wicket as India beat Australia by a margin of six wickets.
