ODI World Cup: Highest successful chases in tournament history
Pakistan recently made history by chasing down a 345-run target against Sri Lanka in ODI World Cup 2023.
Chasing a big total in the ODI World Cup is a challenging task, but it has been achieved by the teams on a few occasions. Most recently, Pakistan chased a record target against Sri Lanka in Hyderabad to change the record books.
On that note, here are the top five highest successful chases in the ODI World Cup history:
5. Sri Lanka 313/7 vs Zimbabwe at New Plymouth, 1992
Zimbabwe batted first and amassed 312/4 against Sri Lanka at New Plymouth in 1992, with Andy Flower (115) and Andy Waller (83) scoring big. Sri Lanka pulled off the then highest-ever ODI chase, winning by three wickets and four balls left. Arjuna Ranatunga and Athula Samarasekera played key roles in the chase, with Ranatunga scoring 88 and Samarasekera adding 75.
4. Bangladesh 322/3 vs West Indies at Taunton, 2019
West Indies batted first and scored a huge 321/8 against Bangladesh at Taunton in 2019, with Evin Lewis (70), Shai Hope (92), and Shimron Hetmyer (50) making half-centuries. Bangladesh chased down the target of 322 with seven wickets and 51 balls to spare. This was the second time that Bangladesh had achieved a 320-plus chase in ODI World Cup. Shakib Al Hasan was the Player of the Match for scoring a magnificent 124 not out.
3. Bangladesh 322/4 vs Scotland at Nelson, 2015
Scotland, asked to bat first, piled up 318/8 against Bangladesh at Nelson in 2015 World Cup, thanks to a brilliant 156 from Kyle Coetzer. Bangladesh achieved the highest-ever ODI chase by a non-top 8 team, winning by six wickets and11 balls left as Tamim Iqbal played a superb innings of 95, while Mahmudullah (62), Mushfiqur Rahim (60), Shakib Al Hasan (52), and Sabbir Rahman (42) all made significant contributions.

2. Ireland 329/7 vs England at Bengaluru, 2011
England chose to bat first against Ireland in Bengaluru in the 2011 ODI World Cup and scored a massive 327/8, thanks to 92 from Jonathan Trott and 81 from Ian Bell. Ireland stunned the cricket world by chasing down the target with three wickets and five balls remaining as the hero of the match, Kevin O’Brien blasted a record-breaking 113 off just 63 deliveries. He hit 13 boundaries and six sixes in his sensational knock, which powered Ireland to a historic victory.
1. Pakistan 345/4 vs Sri Lanka at Hyderabad, 2023
Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first against Pakistan in Hyderabad in ODI World Cup 2023. Kusal Mendis scored 122 and Samarawickrama scored 108 to help Sri Lanka post a mammoth 344/9 at the end of 50 overs. However, Pakistan chased down the target with 10 balls to spare in a remarkable chase. They were 37/2 at one stage before Mohammad Rizwan and Abdullah Shafique put on a match-winning partnership of 176 runs. Rizwan scored a brilliant 131 while Shafique made 113 as Pakistan showed great character to come back from a difficult position and register the highest-ever chase in the tournament history.
