Shubman Gill, India's young batting sensation, was born in Fazilka, Punjab, on September 8, 1999. Gill came to the limelight after a stupendous performance in the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup in 2018, where he ended the season with 372 runs at an average of 124.
He made his ODI debut against New Zealand at Seddon Park in 2019, scoring just nine runs off 21 balls. After a mediocre debut, Gill was in and out of the team till 2021, playing only three games. Gill had a bitter-sweet 2022 as he was released by Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2022 but grabbed a potential spot with the new entrants Gujarat Titans. He was instrumental in Gujarat’s first season success as he accounted for 483 runs at an average of 34.50 and a strike rate of 132.32.
In the absence of senior players, Gill was entrusted with the duties of opening the batting with Shikhar Dhawan, he grabbed the eyes of selectors with scintillating batting performances as he ended 2022 as the third leading run-getter for India in ODIs, scoring 638 runs in an average of 70.88 in 12 innings.
Gill started 2023 from where he left off, with a magnificent century against Sri Lanka and a double century against New Zealand, becoming the youngest Indian to achieve this feat. He continued his rich vein of form in the IPL 2023, smacking all the opposition over the ground with 890 runs in 17 inns at an average of 59.33 and struck at 157.80.
Gill is the only player to aggregate 1000 or more runs in the ODI in 2023 before the start of the World Cup. He has overall accumulated 2136 runs in 41 ODIs at an average of 61.03, which includes eleven half-centuries and six centuries. With the World Cup around the corner, Gill’s form has been the most valuable thing for India, and he is one of the players to watch out for; he is currently ranked second in ODIs.
