ODI Teams: Biggest Victories in ODI History
Mohammed Siraj also achieved the third-best figures of 6/21 by a pacer for India in the history of ODI cricket
Seamer Mohammed Siraj wreaked havoc as he single-handedly dismantled Sri Lanka’s batting line-up in the final of the 16th edition of the Asia Cup. The right-arm fast-medium pacer picked up magical figures of 6/21 in seven overs which also included a maiden as team India dismissed the Lankan Lions for a mere 50 in 15.2 overs, eventually winning the summit clash by ten wickets to also clinch their eighth Asia Cup title in Colombo (RPS).
Batting first, the home side had no answers whatsoever against the quality of India’s bowling. Jasprit Bumrah began the proceedings by removing Kusal Perera in the opening over of the final. It was all about Siraj then as he ripped the Lions apart with his outstanding piece of seam bowling. Nine Lankan players registered single-digit scores as Dasun Shanaka and his men also recorded their second-lowest score in the format in the process.
Hardik Pandya also snared three scalps for just three runs while the opening pair of Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill chased down the target in just 6.1 overs. With this, the Men in Blue scripted their largest victory in one-day internationals in terms of balls remaining (263). Overall, it is the sixth-biggest win in terms of balls remaining in the 50-overs format.
England holds the record for registering the largest victory. They did the job against Canada in the 1979 World Cup in Manchester where they won the contest with 277 balls remaining. The Lankan Lions occupy the second and third positions for winning the encounters with 274 and 272 balls to spare against Zimbabwe in Colombo (SSC) in 2001 and against Canada in Paarl in the 2003 WC respectively.
Nepal is in the fourth spot for a win over Canada with 268 deliveries to spare in Kirtipur in the year 2020. The runners-up of the last two World Cups, New Zealand is in the fifth position. They won the contest with 264 balls remaining against Bangladesh in Queenstown in 2007.
