T20 WC 2022, Day 2 Round-Up, Stats Review: West Indies’ poor form, Paul Stirling’s unwanted record, and other stats

Day 2 of the T20 WC 2022 witnessed yet another upset as Scotland defeated two-time champions West Indies by 42 runs in Match 3 of Group B at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart. George Munsey and Mark Watt were the standout performers for the Scottish side with the former playing an unbeaten knock of 66 off 53 with nine fours while spinner Watt took figures of 3/12 in his four-over spell.

Speaking in detail, skipper Nicholas Pooran won the toss and opted to field first. Apart from Munsey, Calum MacLeod was the top-scorer for his innings of 23 off 14. No other player crossed the 25-run mark but left-handed opener George kept going and carried his bat to take Scotland’s total to 160/5 in 20 overs. Pacers Alzarri Joseph and Jason Holder piced two scalps each in seven overs between them.

Chasing 161, West Indies kept losing wickets at regular intervals as the Scotland bowlers were right up to the mark. This didn’t help the 2012 and 2016 title winners as they got bundled out for just 118 in 18.3 overs. Holder top-scored with 38 off 33 while all the Scotland bowlers chipped in with wickets. Michael Leask also delivered a tight spell of 2/14 in for overs as Richie Berrington’s men came out trumps to shock the Caribbean side. For his unbeaten match-winning half-century, Munsey won the Player of the Match award.

Talking about the second match of the day, Zimbabwe registered their highest total of 174/7 in T20 World Cups eventually beating Ireland by 31 runs in Match 4 at the same venue. Going through a purple patch in 2022, man-in-form Sikandar Raza struck 82 off 48 with five fours and as many maximums which also saw him winning the Player of the Match award at the end.

Batting first, Zimbabwean openers Regis Chakabva and captain Craig Ervine amassed only zero and nine runs respectively. Wessly Madhevere mustered 22 while veteran player Sean Williams scored 12. It was all about Raza then who played a magnificent knock before getting dismissed on the final delivery of the innings. Joshua Little was the pick of the Irish bowlers for his spell of 3/24.

In reply, experienced and seasoned campaigner Paul Stirling bagged a duck while skipper Andrew Balbirnie scored only three. George Dockrell and Gareth Delany amassed 24 apiece while the Zimbabwean bowlers kept picking up wickets. Pacers Blessing Muzarabani, Richard Ngarava, and Tendai Chatara took seven wickets in between them to restrict the Irish to just 143/9 in 20 overs. With this, Craig Ervine’s Zimbabwe have now won eight out of their last nine T20 internationals.

66* - George Munsey registered his third-best score of 66* in T20Is. His top two scores of 127* and 71 are both against the Netherlands in 2019 and 2018 respectively.

9 – Munsey has now smashed the most 50+ scores (9) for Scotland in T20Is. He surpassed Richie Berrington’s tally of eight such scores.

3/12 – Mark Watt recorded his second-best figures of 3/12 in T20 internationals. His spell of 5/27 against the Netherlands in 2016 tops the chart.

28 – Nicholas Pooran has managed to amass only 28 runs in his last six T20I innings at an average of 4.66. His scores read as five, two, two, one, 15, and three.

12 – Rovman Powell has gone 12 innings without a half-century in T20 internationals. His last knock of 61* came against Bangladesh in July this year.

14 – West Indies have lost the most T20I matches (14) in 2022 followed by Ireland (13), who also lost today to Zimbabwe.

5.82 – Watt now has the third-best economy rate of 5.82 by a bowler with a minimum of 40 overs bowled in T20 World Cups. West Indies duo of Sunil Narine and Samuel Badree are in the top two spots with an economy rate of 5.17 and 5.52 respectively.

174/7 – Zimbabwe scripted their highest total of 174/7 in T20 World Cups. Their previous best of 163/5 also came against Ireland in Nagpur in the 2016 edition.

82 – Sikandar Raza registered the highest individual score of 82 for Zimbabwe in T20 World Cups. Previously, Brendan Taylor held the record for his knock of 60* against Australia in the inaugural campaign in 2007.

11 – Paul Stirling has now the second-most ducks (11) in T20Is. His countryman Kevin O’Brien is in the first position for scoring 12 ducks.

3/23 – Blessing Muzarabani recorded his second-best figures of 3/23 in the format. His spell of 3/21 against Australia in Harare in 2018 is at the top.

20 – Stirling has now gone 20 T20I innings without a fifty. His last half-century came against Oman in February this year.

5 – Raza has now won the most POTM awards (5) for Zimbabwe in T20 internationals. He went past Hamilton Masakadza’s tally of four such awards.

6 – Raza equaled Taylor in the fourth spot for hitting the most 50-plus scores (6) for Zimbabwe in the shortest international format. Hamilton Masakadza (11), Sean Williams (9), and Wessly Madhevere (7) occupy the first three spots.

8 – Zimbabwe have won eight out of their last nine T20 internationals.
