Day 4 of the T20 World Cup 2022 witnessed two interesting encounters from Group B. Curtis Campher and George Dockrell’s unbeaten 119-run partnership helped Ireland in chasing down the target of 177 against Scotland while a fiery spell of 4/16 from Alzarri Joseph took West Indies to a 31-run victory against Zimbabwe.
Talking about the Scotland-Ireland match, skipper Richie Berrington won the toss as the Scottish opted to bat first. Half-centurion from the last game, George Munsey got dismissed for a single while wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Cross made 28 off 21. Scotland’s innings was all about opener Michael Jones who smashed an impressive 86 off 55 with six fours and four maximums.
Captain Berrington also contributed with his knock of 37 off 27 as his side reached 176/5 in 20 overs. In reply, the out-of-form Irish opener Paul Stirling managed only eight while captain Andrew Balbirnie amassed 14. Lorcan Tucker and Harry Tector made 20 and 14 respectively as Ireland found themselves in trouble at 61/4.
But Campher and Dockrell then came to the rescue as the former slamming an unbeaten 72 off just 32 with the help of seven fours and two maximums, while Dockrell remained not on 39 as both took their side over the line with one over to spare. Campher, who also took 2/9 in two overs, grabbed the POTM award as Ireland won by six wickets.
In the other game, skipper Nicholas Pooran won the toss and opted to bat first. Opener Johnson Charles top-scored for his team with his knock of 45 off 36. Pooran’s bad form continued as he managed to score only seven. Rovman Powell made 28 while Akeal Hosein chipped in with 23 as West Indies posted 153/7 in their allotted 20 overs. Sikandar Raza was the star performer with the ball for Zimbabwe for his spell of 3/19 in four overs.
Chasing 154, the Zimbabwean batters let their team down as the team struggled against the pace bowling of Joseph and Jason Holder. The former took all his wickets as bowled in a stunning spell in which he gave away just four runs an over. Holder also snared three scalps for 12 runs in 3.2 overs as the Men in Maroon dismissed Zimbabwe for 122 and registered a victory after their disappointing loss to Scotland. For his match-winning spell, Joseph won the POTM award.
