In an era revolutionized by T20 cricket with most experts feeling the need to reduce the ODI format to around 40 overs, 2023 has proved all opinions wrong with a flurry of matches and records. From playing the most number of ODIs in a calendar year to hitting the most number of hundreds to hitting the most sixes, the format saw many records being created and broken.

In 2023, the ODI format saw two big events one in the form of the Asia Cup and another in the form of the World Cup, with India winning the Asia Cup against their Asian rival Sri Lanka while they finished second in the World Cup event, losing against the mighty Aussies.

About 22 teams participated in as many as 218 games in this format with 211 being result-oriented games and seven of them ended with no result.

218 –A total of 218 matches were played in ODIs in 2023 which is the highest aggregate of matches played in the format in a calendar year. The second-highest was 191 in 2007.

481 –A total of 481 players played the format in 2023, making this the most in a calendar year. The year 2022 saw 440 players playing the format, the second-most in a calendar year.

142 –The year 2023 saw 142 centuries being recorded, the most number of centuries recorded in a calendar year. 107 centuries in the year 2015 is the next on the list.

9110 – A total of 9110 fours were hit from the bat, making this the most fours hit in the calendar year. 7135 fours in 2007 is next on the list.

2306 –A total of 2306 maximums were smashed in 2023, the first incident of more than 2000 sixes being scored in this format in a calendar year. 2019 saw 1332 sixes being hit, making it the second-most.

488 –A total of 488 fifties were scored in 2023, the most in a calendar year. 428 half-centuries in 2007 is next on the list.

41 –A total of 41 five-wicket hauls were taken in 2023, the most in any calendar year. 27 five-wicket haul in 2019 is next on the list.

1 –In the 2023 World Cup, the first time an ODI World Cup saw every participant team winning at least two matches in an edition.

5.54 –The teams overall scored at 5.54 runs per over in 2023, the most in a calendar year. 5.50 runs per over in 2015 is next on the list.
