The high-octane final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 between Pakistan and England is all set to take place at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Sunday, November 13. Both sides will look to fire all cylinders in the summit clash to lift their second-ever T20 World Cup title Down Under.
Across the seven editions excluding the one held in Australia currently, teams and players have etched their names in history for various aspects of the event. The mouth-watering summit clash has seen the highest and the lowest scores, batters exploding and getting those humongous sixes, and bowlers working their magic and scalping vital breakthroughs that tilt the momentum at their end.
Hosts and defending champions New Zealand have set the record for the highest total so far in a T20 World Cup final, last year in the UAE played at the Dubai International Stadium. The Kiwis registered a mammoth total of 172 runs for the loss of just four wickets in their stipulated 20 overs. In an interesting turn of events, the Aussies made short work of the massive total and chased it in 18.5 overs, thanks to an unbeaten knock by Mitchell Marsh (77* of 50) and David Warner (53 of 38 balls).
Speaking of the lowest total ever set in a final, team India makes the list as they registered 130 runs in their clash against Sri Lanka in the 2014 ICC T20 World Cup final. The Lankan Lions had won the toss and put the Men in Blue to bat first. Virat Kohli emerged as the lone wolf for the side amassing 77 runs off the bat in their total of 130 runs in 20 overs. Sri Lanka ended up chasing the total in mere 17.5 overs as they clinched the coveted title.
Marlon Samuels of the West Indies smashed a record six sixes in his time at the crease during the ICC T20 World Cup 2012 final played against Sri Lanka. The explosive hitter guided the side after the Caribbean top order had collapsed and then Samuels and Dwyane Bravo pitched in and stabilized the innings. Samuels played a majestic knock of 78 from 55 balls, involving 3 fours and 6 maximums, the most by any player in the history of the marquee event. Adding to this, he also held the record for the longest six of the tournament at 108 meters in the tournament. West Indies clinched their first-ever title in 2012 and repeated the same feat in 2016.
Fans will hope for records to break in the forthcoming finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 which is scheduled to be played between Pakistan and England. In any case, an exciting affair is expected to take place at the iconic MCG between the two heavyweights.
