It’s just a couple of days to go before India announce their final squad for the ICC World Cup starting next month. However, the two-time champions continue to have a pressing problem over settling with the No.4 batsman in the team as all the recent experiments to find the best man for the key position have failed to produce the desired result. The failure of Ambati Rayudu, who was being backed as India’s No.4 in the World Cup for some time, in the recent home series against Australia has taken the situation back to square one.

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir who recently took the membership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday came out with a new name for the No.4 position and it is Kerala batsman Sanju Samson. The 24-year-old is currently playing for Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 and even scored a hundred against a strong Sunrisers Hyderabad – his second overall ton in the T20 tournament after the first one scored in 2017.

Samson’s 102 not out off 55 balls against the Sunrisers though could not win the game for his side but did ample to his reputation as a batsman. He has scored 163 runs from five games this season at an average of 54 plus and strike-rate of above 146. Samson has been playing in the IPL since 2013 and has scored over 2,000 runs from 89 games so far.

‘I have always believed in thinking out of the box’

“For me it’s been very clear, and I see Sanju Samson the right person who can fit No. 4 spot of the team. I have always believed in thinking out of the box and look for best quality players, Sanju would be the best pick,” the 37-year-old cricketer-turned-politician was quoted as saying on Star Sports show Game Plan: India’s Road to World Cup.

Samson has played just only one international game so far which was a T20I against Zimbabwe in Harare in 2015. He had scored 19 in that game.
