Virat Kohli was recently ranked number 1 in the Tests for his sensational batting performance at Edgbaston. He raced past Steve Smith after scoring 200 runs across two innings in Birmingham and became the ninth batsman in the history of cricket to rule the charts in both ODIs and Tests at the same time. He has broken through to the list of legendary batsman with his heroics.
Former Australia cricketer Keith Stackpole was the first player ever to do so way back in 1972. He played 43 Tests and 6 One-Day Internationals for his country and scored more than 3000 runs at an average close to 40. The next player to achieve such a unique feat was the legendary West Indian player Viv Richards. He was at the perch of the rankings twice in his career in both the formats, once in 1982-83 and then for three years from 1985 to 1989.
De Villiers also features in the list
According to the analysis of Redditor ‘SepulchreOfAzrael‘, Javed Miandad and Brian Lara are next in the list. While the former enjoyed the accolades in 1989, the former Windies captain and the stylish batsman topped the rankings from 1994 to 1996. No list starts or ends without the legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar who served his country for more than two decades.
He was at the peak of his career in both the formats of the game in 1998-99 and 2001-02 season. Ricky Ponting then hogged the limelight for a couple of years in 2006 and 2007 when he was leading the ‘near unbeatable’ Australian team.
The modern-day legends Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers are next on the charts. While Amla was at the number 1 position in 2013, his teammate overtook him after 8 months and then enjoyed the position until November 2015. All these cricketers have been the legends for their respective countries and their contribution to the game of cricket can never be forgotten. It remains to be seen now if Virat Kohli will be able to hold on to his number 1 position for a long time in both the forms of the game.
