World Cricket mourns yet another loss in a gloomy year marred with the pandemic. The former English bowler-turned commentator Robin Jackman breathed his last on Friday at the age of 75 years. The poignant news comes hours after the death of his Surrey teammate John Edrich. Prayers and obituaries continue to pour down from different parts of the world.

The International Cricket Council took to their social media handle to confirm the death of the stalwart. Besides the governing body, the likes of veteran South African skipper AB de Villiers to the New Zealander Danny Morrison along with many others took to their social media handle to extend their condolence messages for the legend.

Confirming the death, ICC tweeted “We are saddened to learn about the death of legendary commentator and former England bowler Robin Jackman, who has passed away aged 75.” Former South Africa batsman AB de Villiers took to social media to condole the death of Jackman. “RIP Jackers #robinjackman,” the batting star wrote.

The Aussie great Jeff Thompson also put forth his thoughts. “With the news of losing one Surrey great in John Edrich and now 24 hours later to have Jackers taken from us too soon is a huge blow to the club,” Thompson told the county’s website.

Former New Zealand bowler and fellow commentator Danny Morrison tweeted, “Awoken to the sad news of dear buddy & comms colleague Robin Jackman passing… Blessed to have had wonderful times shared ‘Jackers’. RIP Rob”.

A spotlight on Robin Jackman’s cricketing sojourn

Talking about Jackman’s cricketing journey, he featured in 4 Tests and 15 ODIs for the three lions. Notably, he was handed the Test cap 6 long years after his ODI debut in 1975. The speedster launched severe assault during his reign in the domestic circuit as he amassed 1402 wickets in 399 matches.

After he drew curtains to his international career, the charismatic persona decided to don the commentator’s hat with elan. Hence, he moved to South Africa where he achieved impeccable glory as he honed his skills behind the mic. Interestingly, Jackman was fondly called ‘Jackers’ as he went on to become one of the most popular commentators in the sport.

World Cricket bids adieu to a touch-and-go cricketer who faded away with time due to less presence in the national squad.
