Australia’s left-arm spinner Jonathan Holland made his debut in International cricket on Thursday against the hosts Sri Lanka at Galle in the 2nd Test match of the series. Thus, Holland became one of the few international cricketers who has the name of a country as a part of his name.
Jonathan isn’t the first player who has Holland (the other name of Netherlands) in his name. Australia’s Robert George Holland made his debut in 1984.
A total of 18 players have played in International cricket with the name of a country or an alternative name or older name. This list includes 8 players with Marshall in their name, which is the name of a country called Marshall Islands. Similarly, 3 players with Solomon in their name which replicates Solomon Islands have featured in International cricket.
Sri Lanka’s Sanjeewa Kumara Lanka de Silva in 1997 became the 1st and only player so far to have his own country’s name in his name. He has the word ‘Lanka’ in his name.
