Cricketing fraternity in utter shock after terrorist attack in New Zealand
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern termed it one of New Zealand’s darkest days.
15 March 2019- The day turned out to be a dark day in the history of New Zealand. In Christchurch, a gunman started firing recklessly inside a mosque that took the lives of a number of people, the death toll of which are increasing with every passing hour. Even a video of the terror attack went viral on the social media. In the meantime, the Bangladesh players escaped narrowly.
The Tigers were next scheduled to play the third and final Test against the New Zealanders at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch after tasting defeats the first two encounters. The visiting team’s cricketers, including top-order batsman Tamim Iqbal, had gone to the Al Noor Mosque for Friday Prayers. However, they weren’t allowed to leave the team bus after the shooting began.
Later, they came down from the bus and headed straight to the stadium where they were locked inside the dressing room. Thereafter, the official Twitter handle of the Black Caps announced that the Bangladesh players went safely to the team hotel. Moreover, it was also announced that the last game of the series was cancelled bearing in mind the players’ security.
Cricketers react on the shambolic occurring
The Australia U19 women’s team, who were on their tour of New Zealand as well, was at the same hotel and was reported to be safe. The horrendous occurring has come as a massive development for the Tigers’ cricketers. The Bangladesh cricketers in the form of Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal posted about the horrendous occurring on the social media platforms.
