One of the most elegant left-hand batsmen of all time, Yuvraj Singh celebrated his 35th birthday on Monday. The ever charismatic cricketer who got married last week to his long-time girlfriend Hazel Keech has been a vital member of Team India over the years and was instrumental in India winning the World T20 in 2007 as well as the 50 over triumph in 2011 where he was adjudged Player of the Series.
Making his ODI debut in the ICC Knockout Trophy in 2000, Yuvraj made his presence felt from the very first match as he smashed the star-studded Australian bowling line-up all over Nairobi. Courtesy his brilliant 88, India defeated Australia in the semi-final to progress to the final of the quadrennial event. In the coming years, the flamboyant left-hander started growing in stature and made a reputation of being a match-winner especially in the limited overs format.
In the 2007 World T20, Yuvraj was simply unstoppable. The destructive batsman struck 6 consecutive sixes of England’s Stuart Broad to create a world record. He was simply outstanding throughout the tournament especially in the semi-final against the mighty Aussies where he scored a breathtaking 30-ball 70.
Yuvraj was the standout performer in the 2011 World Cup as well scoring runs and taking wickets on a consistent basis. Despite having health issues, Yuvraj went on to play the full tournament and was diagnosed cancer after a few days. Prior to the World Cup final, Yuvraj had said that he won’t even care if he died but all he wants was to see India holding the coveted World Cup Trophy aloft.
His comeback after surviving a life-threatening disease was an inspirational story to millions of people across the world. Though Yuvraj hasn’t been a permanent fixture in the Indian squad in the recent past, he will remain one of the biggest match winners India has ever produced, especially in limited overs cricket.
Here are some of the best reactions from cricketers and other celebrities who wished him on his 35th birthday.
